Truck tractor prices up 15% year over year

In a year of uncertainty, with a health and economic crisis impacting most of the world, Ritchie Bros. made the shift to 100% online bidding in 2020, showcasing our investment in technology while driving record-breaking demand and strong pricing for equipment and trucks.

In fact, our March 2021 Used Equipment Market Trends summary report shows truck tractor sales are up 15 percent in the U.S. and five percent in Canada, compared to the same time period last year. The March 2021 report, which is available for download now highlights equipment categories that performed particularly well last, including truck tractors, flatbed trucks, van trucks, and van trailers.

Truck tractor sales in 2020 – more volume and stronger pricing

We sold approximately 18% more truck tractors (T/A) in the U.S. in 2020 vs. 2019 and median quarterly pricing saw an uptick in Q2 through Q4.

Early 2021 highlights include a 2020 Kenworth T800 sleeper that sold for CA$160,000 (US$126,992) in Edmonton, AB; a 2014 Peterbilt 380 sleeper that sold for US$112,500 in Orlando, FL; and a 2019 Mack AN64T Anthem sleeper that sold for US$100,000 in our Rocky Mountain Regional Auction.

Flatbed truck sales in 2020 – more volume & stronger pricing

We saw higher volumes and pricing for flatbed truck in the United States in 2020 vs. 2019, with quarterly pricing up in Q2 through Q4.

Early 2021 highlights include a 2019 Ford F450 crew cab 4x4 flatbed truck that sold for US$57,500 in Orlando, FL; a 2016 Peterbilt 348 T/A that sold for US$55,000 in Houston, TX; and a 2017 Freightliner M2 106 S/A that sold for US$45,000 in our Rocky Mountain Regional Auction.

Van truck sales in 2020 – more volume & stronger prices

We sold a higher volume of van trucks in 2020 vs. 2019 and pricing was up in Q1 through Q3.

Early 2021 highlights include a 2018 Freightliner M2 106 van truck that sold for US$74,000 in Orlando, FL; a 2011 Kenworth T370 S/A that sold for US$51,000 in Denver, CO; and a 2014 Mack GU533 Granite T/A that sold for CA$57,000 (US$45,121).

Van trailer sales in 2020 – more volume & stronger prices

We sold a higher volume and achieved stronger pricing for van trailers in 2020 vs. 2019. We also saw a 13% jump in out-of-state purchases for van trailers last year.

Early 2021 highlights include a 2019 Utility VS2DX 53-ft. x 102-in. T/A van trailer that sold for US$35,000 in Orlando, FL; a 2018 Great Dane 53-ft T/A that sold for CA$39,000 (US$30,872) in Toronto, ON; and a 2019 Utlity 4000DX 53-ft T/A that sold for US$30,000 in Houston, TX.
